Ernest Wilson’s & Co. Ltd. can trace its roots back to 1956 when Ernest Wilson established himself as a Business Transfer Agent in Bradford City centre. Although Ernest’s personal life remains largely unknown, his professional legacy is well-remembered. His journey with the firm was brief; due to ill health, he retired in 1961, passing the business to Jess Halliday, a former stockbroker and promoter of the Bradford Panthers motorcycle speedway team.
Jess Halliday's tenure brought a unique blend of business acumen and community spirit – though it wasn’t uncommon for the office to close when she met clients. In 1973, as retirement loomed, Jess sought a partner to ensure the firm’s continuity, bringing in Robert Williamson. By 1974, Robert had modernised operations, ensuring the office stayed open during business hours and focused on client interests, which led to rapid growth.
By 1983, the firm needed additional expertise, prompting the arrival of David Holmes from the insurance industry. David’s role quickly expanded, making him an invaluable part of the team. In 1985, as one of the North of England’s leading Business Transfer Agents, the firm embraced technology by computerising its operations. Paul Williamson spearheaded this transformation, and the introduction of an IBM System 36 allowed the firm to double in size within two years.
The 1990s saw continued growth and strategic appointments. Stuart Moorhouse joined in 1991 and quickly advanced to Sales Manager. By 1993, Paul Williamson became a partner, and in 1995, the firm incorporated as Ernest Wilson’s & Co. Ltd., with Paul as Managing Director, David as Chairman, and Stuart as Sales Director.
The business continued to flourish, and in 2002, the firm moved from its Bradford office to a purpose-built headquarters in Leeds to accommodate its growing team and operations. This period also saw the recruitment of key personnel like Michael Peel.
Despite economic challenges, Ernest Wilson’s & Co. Ltd. has always prioritised investment in its people and services. This commitment was evident during the 2010 recession, with the strategic hire of Martin Humberstone, a former Area Director at Lloyds TSB, ensuring continued support for clients amid financial difficulties.
In 2019, the firm entered a new chapter when it was acquired by Eddisons, a subsidiary of Begbies Traynor Group plc Paul and Robert ensured a smooth transition, maintaining their roles to uphold the firm’s standards.
Although Robert and Jonathan have since retired, the legacy of Ernest Wilson’s & Co. Ltd. remains robust, committed to maximising opportunities for clients in an ever-evolving market.
Today, Ernest Wilson’s & Co. Ltd. stands as a testament to over six decades of dedication to client service, continual growth, and adaptation. From its humble beginnings in Bradford to becoming a leading Business Transfer Agent in the North of England, the firm’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence!
